Merino wool vs Harris Tweed - What are the differences?

Every year, different Gatsby caps, classic flat caps or voluminous balloon caps are made from merino wool or Harris Tweed. But why are these two materials so popular and what are the differences? Both are wool and yet both have different properties.

Harris Tweed is an absolute classic for winter hats! It is intricately hand-woven only in the Outer Hebrides on the left-hand side of Scotland. This method of production and the quality of the wool create a hard-wearing and very warm fabric that is ideal for really cold temperatures. Our Peaky Harris Tweed Flatcap in gray is also made of 100% Harris Tweed.

However, if that's too warm for you, you'll be happier with our Bakerboy Merino Flatcap. This is made from 100% Bavaria Loden merino wool, which is not only known for its incredibly soft comfort, but also balances out temperatures. So you never have a hat that is too warm or too cold. Merino wool is also hard-wearing, but does not come close to the warmth and quality of Harris Tweed.

In summary, if you are looking for a very warm hat for the cold winter, you will be more than satisfied with a Harris Tweed hat. If Harris Tweed is too warm for you and you prefer softer wool, you will be happy with a merino wool hat.
